The noise level is comparable
to those produced by the original system, with slightly increased
power and torque, all within the parameters set by the new European
standards . The "Slip-on" cans are fitted into the original
collectors using a short junction pipe; the "Bolt-on" versions
use a flange, which joins to that on the original system. Both
are available in oval versions, with a choice of aluminium,
carbon fibre or titanium skin.
In order to achieve industry-leading standards of reliability and
durability, particular attention is paid to the choice of materials.
The internal structure is entirely made from stainless steel, while
the sound-absorbent material used withstands sustained temperatures
of up to 1000°C.
Before a system is approved for production, it must undergo lengthy
tests on the dyno and on the road. For example, part of testing
of the carbon fibre outer skin used in manufacture was carried out
on the Nardò circuit, nearby Lecce , southern Italy. During
these tests, a Honda CBR 1100 XX fitted with a pair of SBK carbon
fibre exhausts completed approximately 2,000 kilometres in less
than 10 hours at an average speed of 210 km/h.
